THE FERTILE VALLEYS

This is the English translation of Las Vegas. I don't know what Vegas used to look like, but today it's one big valley and it doesn't look too fertile. But it's a fun place to spend a couple of days. I don't know how anyone actually lives there.

Anyway....here are some fun photos from our trip, mostly of me being a jackass, brought to you by Lindsey, who just turned 23 last Saturday.

Happy Birthday, baby.

DEEP THROAT

No, this isn't a continuation of the Vegas entry. Deep Throat of Watergate fame has been revealed. This doesn't really impact anyone younger than, say, 35 but it's still historically significant and something I've been interested in for a long time despite being a whippersnapper. The Vanity Fair article is a pretty interesting read , good closure to the decades-long episode.

It also got me thinking...this country sure could use a good deep throat right about now.

I SAW TYRA BANKS AT THE MALL TODAY

I saw Tyra Banks at the mall today. It wasn't as exciting as I thought it might be. Although I can confirm that a) she's beautiful and b) she's tall. And then I went on my merry way while throngs of Burbank shoppers jockeyed for her autograph. Yawn.

18 MONTHS

Today makes a year and six months for Lindsey and me. We took in a light dinner and headed home thinking we'd do enough celebrating the next couple of days in Vegas. Linds has passed out on the couch and I'm sucking on Ricola cough drops (which taste like Swiss ass) trying to keep an impending cold at bay. I can't wait to get to Vegas already!

I love you, baby.

ROLL OVER, DARWIN

Another American state plans on making its children idiots before they grow up. I give you...Pennsylvania. Next on their agenda? Studying the Force and a unit on the search for the one true ring.

Speaking of the Force, saw the new Star Wars flick yesterday. I must say that I enjoyed myself despite the many plotholes and some mildly dreadful dialogue. It didn't bother me as much the last two movies and saying that it's better than the last two movies isn't really saying much at all. Still, I had fun watching it. That's all I gotta say about that. After all, my passion for this series ended with the first fart joke in Phantom Menace.

RETARD PLAYING A PSP

That's what comes to mind when I see this photo, taken by Sue. Despite the about-to-drool look on my face, I was very impressed by the PSP and its graphics. My mind was racing, trying to figure out how to get one without spending any money. But all I could muster was "game...good..."

THE ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPO: 2005

Thanks to friends Sue and Rob (and no thanks to my forgetfulness) I was able to attend E3 this year, which I did not attend last year. Today was the last day and the only day I went, and it was plenty. Here's a short photo essay of the day's events.

Nintendo's presence was, of course, enormous. Their booth was impressive and so were their games and hardware. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Nintendo DS and its offerings. The industry ate it all up, as evidenced by the Nintendo booth constantly being packed to the rafters.

One of my favorite parts of the show was the tribute to old school gaming. They had a great setup of a couple dozen classic arcade games as well as a mini-museum of classic systems.

I can't wait to see the upcoming Narnia movie. Here's a kick-ass minotaur!

There's a new Katamari Damacy game coming out and its presence was felt with a big showcase at the Namco booth, a huge Katamari ball with tons of crap stuck to it, and, of course, the prince himself. My day was complete when this photo was taken.

We ran into our Drawing Board friend Michael Molcher (aka Walrus on the board) and chatted for a bit while we tried to win t-shirts (I ended up with 4 by the day's end...yeehah!).

Marvel made its presence known with a huge booth promoting their upcoming games. The Ultimate Spider-Man area.

The very cool looking Fantastic Four game based on the movie (I have a feeling this'll be better than the film it's based on).

And the Incredible Hulk, heralded here by a giant banner with art by Brian Hitch.

The absolutely adorable Game Boy Micro.

I found the PSP very impressive as well but didn't get too many photos of it in action (too busy playing it!). Here's more Micro.

And finally, me doing my Conan impression.

Overall, I had a wonderful time. Sue got me everywhere I needed to be to get a decent amount of free swag. I'll be nerding it up for awhile with all the cool shirts I got.

So, yeah.

THE STATE OF ME

Went to the doctor yesterday for my usual check-up and to ask about whether I could fly on airplanes or not. It seems like such an odd question to ask but with my Dad grounded by his doctor due to his health problems I was left wondering whether I would have any cause to stay on the ground. I've been told that since my blood pressure was stable I could, indeed, fly the friendly skies (although Southwest isn't that friendly). Which is good because next week Linds and I are flying to Vegas for her birthday.

Today should be a short day at work. And tomorrow, E3!

Here's a photo I painted in Photoshop for my bio page in the next Zowie! book. Kinda creepy, ain't it? Yes, I used a filter for the background. Fuck you.

NOHO ARTS FESTIVAL

After spending the better part of a half hour trying to figure out how to park anywhere near it, Linds and I finally arrived at the NoHo Arts Festival (more some other day about my hate of the term "NOHO"). We really had no idea what it was supposed to be or even where it was supposed to be, but we knew it was in NOrth HOllywood and that it was probably in the vicinity of the giant Ferris wheel that could be seen from a mile away.

It was about a quarter to 8 when we stepped upon Lankershim Boulevard, usually one of the busier streets in the valley but this day it was closed for about 10 city blocks to acccomodate the festival. Most of the event was devoted to the "arts", that is, the manufactured theater industry in the neighborhood and some stands featuring local artists and craftsmen. Neighborhood businesses also participated (booming business for the Dairy Queen this day...it was quite warm). We got to see about 4 or 5 of those before we realized the Arts bit of the festival was gonna close in 5 minutes. So we turned around and thought we'd check out the festival bit of the festival, which seemed to be bustling with activity. There was exactly one food stand selling the usual crap (churros, popcorn, corn dogs) and as far as the eye can see, carnie-run booths and questionable-safety rides. We played a couple of the games (I won Lindsey a small monkeyish-bear looking stuffed creature by throwing darts at inflated balloons, which might have been cathartic if it didn't cost me a buck a dart) and didn't even mention trying out any of the rides.

From the moment we arrived to when decided to am-scray, it was a full 20 minutes or so. But it was a nice diversion and we've been jonesing for a carnival atmosphere lately. Perhaps we'll go back today and take in all that art we missed.

Not satisfied with the cold churro we shared (which we waited 5 minutes for because it was "fresh out 'the oven"), we decided to find a place to dine. Linds joked that we should eat at the restaurant where Robert Blake allegedly killed his wife. I said, "Okay." I don't think Linds expected me to take her seriously, but now I was curious to find out if it was the restaurant that drove Blake to pop a cap in his wife's whatever.

We arrived at Vitello's and decided to dine outside. It was a beautiful night and it might have been more romantic had it not been on the sidewalk where the alcoholics were out taking their smoke breaks and bothering the other diners. Still, it was a nice night and the food was decent (I did not order the dish named after Gary Marshall). Neither of us were driven to murder the other, so that was good. We might have capped off the night by visiting the nearby Brady Bunch house, only blocks away, but we headed home.

On the way back, we hit the video store and rented Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (a movie I hadn't seen yet...we watched most of it last night before passing out) and Alice Sweet Alice, a horror movie starring a very young Brooke Shields. We've been wanting to see this for awhile so it may be tonight's entertainment. Hope we can sleep afterwards.

LONE SAUSAGE HAPPENINGS

Earlier in the day we had a voice recording session with Breehn, Jason, and myself for the upcoming Lone Sausage short film, Roybertito's 60 Second Spot. My good friend Matt was running the boards in the recording booth at Chace Sound in Burbank. We had a great time and I even participated in a couple of the recordings. The production is moving along surprisingly smooth. Perhaps it's because I have less hands-on duties on this one than the last one. I hope that's not the case.

DAVE CHAPPELLE DID NOT GO CRAZY AND IS NOT ON CRACK

Apparently, all is explained on TIME.com this morning (which I don't have access to since I have no subscription) and in TIME Magazine tomorrow. I didn't buy the NEWSWEEK article so I'll probably not buy the TIME one, but I'm glad the kid's okay. I knew it had something to do with the 50 mil he was getting. That much money might drive lesser comedians into the loving arms of drugs or the six arms of crazy, but Chappelle doesn't seem to be that kinda dude.

And now, Bizarro.

THE WORLD

It's getting scarier and scarier in North Korea. Good thing they don't have nuclear weapons yet. Oh, wait--

TIME TRAVEL NEWS

Well, if a time travel convention strictly for time travelers were to be set up somewhere, it probably would have been MIT. Lo and behold, it is.

LONE SAUSAGE MAYHEM

Production is fully underway on the next Lone Sausage film. I don't know if writer/director/mine sweeper Breehn is feeling the pressure to one-up Here Comes Dr. Tran, but I'm not. I'm sure this short will have it's own brand of great success, if not on the level of Dr. Tran.

Check out the production journal for the latest on quesadillas and puking and ladles.

ZOMBIES

I did a two-page comic for a British zombie magazine called The End Is Nigh. I didn't write it, but it was a lot of fun to do and I discovered some new drawing skills along the way, which is always good. I hope to have copies of the magazine available in time for the San Diego convention. Here's a samplin':

And I did this for fun but somehow it ended up in the magazine, too. Go figure.

I also did this for fun. It didn't end up anywhere but here. You primitive screwheads.
